Sitfuated at the heart of ‘The Rock City’ on the banks of the River Cauvery, Holy Cross College is a pioneer Catholic institution in South India. It is an important citadel of learning, administered by the Congregation of the of the Cross of Chavanod. The zeal and commitment of the Sisters of the Cross, far-reaching vision, undaunted courage and the heroic lives of the early sisters have embellished it in no small measure. If we enjoy the benefits of an illustrious institution today, we owe to those down the long years, who have endured the labour and paid the price. Truly, we are indebted to the distinguished services of the Jesuit Fathers of St. Joseph’s college from its modest beginnings to its sturdy growth. Fr. P. Carty, Fr. Haas Fr. Billard and Fr. T.N. Siqueira were of great help in the early years from getting affiliation to strengthening the spiritual foundation of the college. Fr. Haas reveals his never-failing help to Holy Cross College and how he contributed to its growth as a Chaplain for 30 years.

The history of Holy Cross College dates back to 1902, when Mother Sophie set up a primary school with only a room or two and 5 girl students.

Mother Sophie Descombes (1923 – 1949) the first Principal laboured for the great cause of education. Education is not only a process of building up knowledge or of developing human skill, rather it is the transition of the spiritual, moral and cultural heritage by which the human person comes to maturity of personality and integrity of character . This was the vision that inspired the valiant woman, Mother Sophie along with the dedicated band of sisters who founded the Institution and laboured for the great cause of Education. Her remarkable faith, determined courage, breath of vision and motherly love enabled her to respond to the need of the hour. ‘One could never forget the edifying picture of Mother Sophie going about the campus, her lips constantly moving in silent prayer, greeting the students, young and old, with a sweet smile and an encouraging word..’ (Late Prof. Arokiasamy , St. Josephs college). In 1945 she was awarded the Kaiser –I – Hind Medal for her work as an educationalist, by the British Indian government. In 1961, the Cross of the Legion of Honour was bestowed on her by the French government. The Golden Jubilee celebration of her religious life witnessed the presence of prominent leaders and educationalists, the great public esteem and appreciation she received for her devoted service to the noble cause of women’s education in South India. Mother Sophie was so much identified with Holy Cross that it was no wonder that for many, Holy Cross was simply Mother Sophie.

Holy Cross College with its magnificent history has grown from a tiny mustard seed planted and nurtured by Mother Sophie and today it stands as a steady Oak tree that provides knowledge, skills and values for life to thousands of students who pass through the portals of this great institution.
