Department Profile
The Department of Tamil was started in 1923 to offer Part I Tamil for Under Graduate (B.A., B.Sc.) courses. Over the decades, it has evolved into a full-fledged Research Department offering UG, PG, M.Phil., and Ph.D. programmes under Bharathidasan University.
Our Journey
The department has expanded its academic repertoire and research status over the years:
Started offering Part I Tamil for B.A. and B.Sc. courses.
Postgraduate programme launched in 2004–2005.
M.Phil. in Tamil Literature introduced in 2008–2009.
Recognised for Ph.D. research (Full-Time & Part-Time) by Bharathidasan University.
Undergraduate degree programme launched in 2018–2019.
Key Activities & Highlights
The curriculum is designed not only to provide Tamil knowledge but also to enable students to take up various competitive Examinations of the State and Central Governments.
Two Major projects were sanctioned by UGC to the department staff: 1) Dr. P. Thanapackiyam 2) Dr. A. Jasintha Rani. Our staff members have authored four books. To make the learning simple and effective six books have been prepared and published by all the staff of the department for students’ use. Special coaching classes are held for the slow learners. Students participated in inter-collegiate competitions of other colleges for script writing, Poetry writing, dramatic and creative writing and received prizes and cash awards.
Every Year Veeramamunivar Tamil Association conducts Muththamizh Vizha to tap the talents and the department also organizes Inter-collegiate competitions annually that develop the oratorical, dance, drama, poetry, recitation, essay writing, story and script writing skills of the students. Every year II UG students of Part I – Tamil are taken on an educational tour to different temples in Tamil Nadu for experiential learning of Temple art and Temple sculptures. Students are tested both in the CIA and External examination based on this out of the classroom learning experience. The Department plans to offer certificate courses in Tamil Journalism as a means of skill development for job prospects.
Uniqueness
To create an environment to succeed in competitive exams. Govt job exam Tamil paper and the virtues and greatness of femininity and violence against women and its solutions. To make the present generation aware of the welfare schemes of the government and the paper called Mahaliriyal and to get employment and a certificate course in Media Studies. The course is designed to introduce the present generation to the Tamils’ architecture, sculpture and worship by taking all the students of third year class to the famous temple sites of Tamil Nadu. The Department is unique in that all the professors have Ph.D. degree and 11 professors have passed the National and State Qualification Examination.

The vision is to inculcate quality education in Tamil literature, culture, and heritage through the Tamil language, nourishing creative achievements in the mother tongue and developing the spirit of cultural unity.
Mission
We strive to help students communicate effectively in their mother tongue by learning Tamil language through Tamil literature, which plays an important role in the modern world of life, art, and culture.
