History
The PG and Research Department of Physics has a rich history that spans several decades. It was founded in 1971 under the leadership of Rev. Sr. Prisca, marking the beginning of a journey towards academic excellence and research advancements. Since its inception, the department has witnessed remarkable growth and development in various aspects.
In its early years, the department faced the challenges that come with establishing a new academic program. Rev. Sr. Judith and Rev. Sr. Prisca provided crucial guidance during this formative period, nurturing the department and steering it towards success. Their expertise and dedication laid a strong foundation for the department's growth.
Over time, the department expanded its faculty, attracting accomplished and passionate educators who have contributed significantly to the field of physics education and research. In 2013, the Department made noteworthy advancements in expanding the field of Physics by transforming it into a dedicated PG and Research Department. This strategic initiative was undertaken with the goal of fostering research activities and facilitating the pursuit of advanced studies in the field.
The department has been actively engaged in research activities and has secured numerous projects funded by prestigious national agencies such as the University Grants Commission (UGC), Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB). These projects have allowed faculty members and students to explore cutting edge research areas, contribute to scientific knowledge and make valuable advancements in their respective fields.
In addition to research, the department has consistently emphasized the importance of holistic education. To create awareness about current topics of global significance, the department organizes seminars, workshops, and conferences on a regular basis. These events provide a platform for researchers, academicians and students to exchange ideas, share knowledge and foster collaborations. To further enhance its educational offerings, the Department of Physics enters into the "SCHOOL OF PHYSICAL SCIENCES" in the academic year 2020-2021. This initiative aims to promote alternative education by providing a joyful and enriching experience that helps students unfold their innate potentials. The School of Physical Sciences serves as a testament to the department's commitment to innovation and excellence in education.
PG and Research Department of Physics, with more than 50 years of service has shown remarkable achievements in both academic and non-academic activities, stands as a testament to the vision, dedication and hard work of its founders, faculty members and students. At present, the Department has 16 committed and dedicated faculty members who incessantly works hard for the betterment of the students’ growth and keeps up the vision and mission of the Department. To cater to the current trends in research domain, the department has developed the molecular dynamics simulation lab with GPU workstations in 2019 through SERB-TARE grant. Besides that, the Department of Physics also offers computational lab facility from the year 2023 which plays a crucial role in advancing the department’s mission of conducting cutting-edge research, preparing students for successful careers and contributing to scientific knowledge in the field of Physics.
