Department of History — Profile

 Department Profile

The Department of History was established in the year 1972 with an intermediate course under the headship of Rev. Sr. Fabiana, Professor of History. The Department strives to play a vital role by inculcating a fervour for patriotism, coupled with inclusion, and equal participation to create a just and humane society. It also focuses on creating genuine bureaucrats for nation-building by providing a platform through the Holy Cross IAS Academy.

 Our Journey

The department has continually expanded its academic repertoire and facilities over the decades:

Department Established
Started with an intermediate course under Rev. Sr. Fabiana.
2001
Specialization in Tourism
Undergraduate course sponsored by the UGC for five years (2001–2006).
2009
Museum Established
Houses wide exhibits of coins, palm leaf manuscripts, stamps, and fossilized wood.
2011
Eco-Tourism Add-on
A new course sanctioned by the UGC (2011–2013).
2012
Upgraded to Research Department
Began providing extensive research facilities for students.
2017
Post-Graduation & IAS Academy
M.A. History started, and Holy Cross IAS Academy commenced.

 Uniqueness

  • Celebrated Golden Jubilee in 2022.
  • Field-based teaching of subjects such as Archaeology and Epigraphy.
  • Conducting outreach programmes in adopted villages and government schools to create socially responsible citizens.
  • Hands-on training to read and write Tamil Brahmi Script, pottery, and drawing and mapping of historical sites.
  • Established Museum in 2009 containing Coins, Palm leaf manuscripts, Stamp collection, and Fossil Wood.
  • Providing a platform to bureaucrats for nation-building through Holy Cross IAS Academy which commenced in 2017.
  • “Crossian Museum” was established in 2020 to highlight the historical journey of Holy Cross College.
