History



 In today’s rapidly evolving landscape of media, training, practice, and creative thinking constitute the fundamental tools for advancement, serving as the core components of the Department of Visual Communication. Holy Cross College holds the distinction of pioneering this department in Trichy, boasting a rich history of excellence in teaching and research. Since its establishment in 2002, spanning over 22 years, the department has been steadfast in its commitment to delivering exceptional media education, training, and research. This commitment is manifested through a curriculum meticulously designed to integrate theoretical insights with practical applications tailored to meet the diverse needs and aspirations of students.

Elevating its status to a postgraduate department in 2004, the department-initiated MPhil courses, followed by doctoral degree programs in 2015, thus evolving into a distinguished PG and Research department of Visual Communication. The establishment of the Holy Cross Communication Centre Video Studio on September 27th, 2004, inaugurated by Sri Vani Jeiram, a renowned playback singer, marked a significant milestone. Subsequently, the launch of Holy Cross Community Radio (FM 09.4MHz) on December 19th, 2006, inaugurated by Dr. Ramamurthy Sridhar, former Director of Educational Multimedia Research, further underscored the department's commitment to embracing innovative media platforms

The department has transformed into a full-fledged Media House, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities such as the Mac Video Studio, Recording Theatre, E-content/Video Lessons Centre, Chroma Key Shoot Space, and a preview theatre. Guided by a visionary outlook, the department aspires to establish a Center dedicated to providing avant-garde training in visual media, with an emphasis on alternative perspectives and aesthetically presenting local realities using global media strategies.

Central to the department's mission is the provision of a comprehensive spectrum of visual media, enabling students to make informed career choices and fostering a deeper understanding of media by nurturing their creativity. Additionally, the department endeavors to leverage alternative media to effect positive societal changes and bridge the gap between academia and the media industry.

At the heart of our endeavors lies the aim to equip students with the requisite skills to thrive in the contemporary media landscape while fostering a culture of research and creative exploration.

Our team of dedicated academicians, complemented by media experts, professionals, and researchers with global competencies, mentor students in mastering both the content and form of media to navigate today’s dynamic media landscape successfully.
