COMMERCE


History


 The establishment of the Commerce Department is an important milestone of the history of Holy Cross College. The much-cherished desire and long felt need of the locality had blossomed in the year 1980 with the introduction of B. Com programme with 60 students and a single staff member. We have grown into one of the strongest departments with 953 students and 19 staff members. Post Graduate Degree was introduced in the year 1993. In 2004 Research Scholars were inducted for the M.Phil. Program and in the same year B. Com with specialisation in Computer Application was introduced. The department was conferred with the status of PG and Research Department in the year 2009 to prepare the students for high quality research in various fields of Commerce. The department was incorporated under the School of Management Studies from the year 2018 onwards. In collaboration with the BPO industry the new programme B. Com (BPO) was initiated. To develop vocational skills of the students and enhance the employability of the students in the financial sector B. Voc (Banking, Finance Services and Insurance) was established.


Uniqueness


The department of commerce has pioneered the idea of book bank in which the books are contributed by the alumnae.

The students are encouraged to participate in various conferences in and off campus and present papers to improve their subject knowledge and research and analytical thinking

The students are trained to organize and develop their event managing skills by organizing various programs and competitions at state and national level in campus. The Department also organizes entrepreneurial development courses to upgrade additional skills and develop them into entrepreneurial ventures through IIC.

“Earn while you Learn” – Department provides a platform to the students to exhibit their entrepreneurial skills by putting up stalls of food, handcrafts, etc., made by them.

Students are encouraged to do Professional Courses like CA, CMA and CS.

Department initiates reading skills to the students by providing News Paper - Business Line / The Hindu / Business Standard on daily basis.

To impart professional knowledge for the students Guest faculties are invited (Auditor and Industrialist) to handle classes.

The department encourages the students to excel in Sports and Fine Arts.
